Women, Art & the Spirit World with Jennifer Higgie

Rebecca Fletcher will be joined by Jennifer Higgie, one of our foremost art writers and respected art critics at work today, to discuss gender and art history and the lives, work and artistic influences of some of history's most innovative artists who explored the boundaries between this world and the next - many of whom are celebrated in New York's Guggenheim and Tate Gallery collections.

Her latest book, The Other Side - A Journey into Women, Art and the Spirit World explores the lives and work of a group of extraordinary women.  From 12th century mystic, composer and artist Hildegard of Bingen to 19th century English spiritualist Georgiana Houghton, whose paintings swirl like a cosmic Jackson Pollock; the early 20th century Swedish artist, Hilma af Klint*, who painted with the help of her spirit guides and whose recent exhibition at New York's Guggenheim broke all attendance records to Agnes Pelton, who painted her visions beneath the vast skies of California; the Swiss healer, Emma Kunz, who used geometric drawings to treat her patients; and British surrealist and occultist, Ithell Colquhoun, whose estate of more than 5,000 works recently entered the Tate Gallery collection.  All these women had a desire to communicate with, and learn from, other dimensions.  Gender exclusions of art history, contemporary relevance of myth and the impact of spiritualism on feminism and contemporary art, Jennifer shares her radical reappraisal of a marginalised group of artists in this intoxicating blend of memoir, biography and art history.
